PRO scales digital payments with Autogiro Onboarding

PRO, Pensionärernas Riksorganisation, is Sweden’s largest organisation for pensioners, with over 250 000 members nationwide. The organisation provides social activities, education, travel, and advocacy, supporting a strong and active community for pensioners across Sweden.


With a substantial volume of invoices and membership documents distributed annually, efficient and reliable payment processes are essential to supporting PRO’s operations and member services.



The Challenge

Autogiro, Sweden’s trusted direct debit system built on Bankgirot’s national payment infrastructure, has long been the preferred method for recurring payments. However, onboarding into Autogiro has traditionally relied on manual processes.


At PRO, this meant paper mandates, manual validation of account details, and administrative follow-ups. With only ca.15% of members using direct debit, the majority of payments still relied on manual invoice payments.


For PRO, this meant unnecessary administration, a higher risk of errors, and limited ability to scale recurring payments efficiently.



The Solution

Together with Orbyt, PRO introduced Digital Autogiro Onboarding, modernising how members activate recurring payments. The solution does not replace Autogiro.


It modernises how members connect to it.


The solution combines Bankgirot’s Autogiro infrastructure, BankID digital identification and Open Banking account validation to create a fully digital onboarding journey.


Members can activate Autogiro within minutes directly from existing communication channels such as invoices and reminders. QR codes on reminders allow members to access payment or Autogiro activation instantly with a simple scan.


The result is a seamless experience built on a payment method members and Swedish consumers already know and trust.



The Results

The impact was immediate once members were presented with the digital onboarding journey:


  • 75% Onboarding completion rate
  • 50% Increase in Autogiro activations within one month
  • Zero manual follow-ups required

With account details validated upfront and mandates confirmed digitally, the need for manual corrections and administrative handling was removed.
